inner spots?? - what are they?

i have always assumed that the inner spots on my mk1 were for the main beam how ever this doesnt appear to be the case???

they do not come on at all, tries side light, head light, beam, and the two levels of fog!?!?

what are they for! - i seem to recal they are for fog now, but mine dont work!

i think ill just get a single lamp grille and be done with it!

Tim,

They were driving lights on all but the Campaigns (fogs) I think.

Cheers

Must have been all late twin light models - which would only be Drivers and Campaigns unless anyone went for the twin light option on say a GLS.

Golf GX also came with inner fogs - all other inner lights are driving lights (high-beam) ones, fitted by the dealer, or an owner.

To confirm, inner fogs only came (standard) on '83 Driver (not the '80 ones), the GX, and the E-chassis Campaigns (not even on the D-chassis ones)

After reading this post i am still slightly confused!
I have a 1983 GTi and have a original twin headlamp grille which i intend to keep.
With the ignition on, i press the headlamp switch once and the outer lights on both sides come on(sidelights).
Press it again and the outer lights come on brighter(main beam)
Now i pull the indicator stalk towards me and this makes the outer lights brighter again(dip)
But the inner lights don't come on at all, my fog light switch on the dash has 2 postions, 1 is for the rear fogs but in the other position nothing happens!!
Anyone help its so fustrating!!

Could be anything - blown bulbs/fuse, disconnected wiring, etc

The usual issue is that the lights are driving lights, fitted by a dealer, or an owner, and the wiring is now degenerating - especially if those Skotchloks were used - they are the worst invention ever!  :x

They're most definately (meant to be!) activated by the fog light switch. I think in the 1st postion. Mine don't work either-til tomorrow when my driver goes to the auto leccy for a "tidy up"!

All golfs had this 2 stage fog lamp switch fitted, it was a standard thing on even the base model cars.

Most of the golfs that have the twin lamps have the lights wired to the main beam headlamps, as they are usually intended to be driving lamps. As mentioned though there are some which were fitted with a version which was intended to be a fog lamp, and these were wired to that 2 stage switch. The only difference between the two is the angle of the beam. On the driving lamps the beam will be angled more-or-less straight ahead. On the fog lamps the beam is angled towards the ground. The lamps themselves both sit straight, it's the relectors and lenses that change the angle of the beam.

If you wire in driving lamps as fog lamps on the two stage switch, you do risk getting pulled over if you have them on because the beam will be too high. Your car may also fail an MOT because it will be impossible to have the rear fog lamp on unless the front ones are on, and because the beam of the front lamps will be too high it could fail, but I'm not certain on this.

Fossie, you got the main beam and dipped beam round the wrong way. The dipped beam lights are the lights that you will drive with 90% of the time, and they come on with the second click of the headlamp switch.  The Main beam lights come on when you pull the indicator stalk forwards. It's the main beam that the grill lamps are normally wired into.

If yours are doing nothing, then check the condition of the wiring and bulbs first before doing anything else. Also establish wether they are fog lamps or driving lamps, then you'll have more of a clue where to start looking for faults. High chance they are driving lamps unless your car is a campaign model.

Hope that helps,

Mike.

OK, some useful info there… I've recently replaced my debadged single lamp grille with a slightly more standard looking original twin grille.  Not knowing whether they were fogs or driving lamps on the new grille I looked in the engine bay for any tell tail wiring from previous grilles and found the wiring was there to wire them in as driving lights, which I've done.

Things is though they're really not very bright (probably not as bright when looking head on as the outer lamps are dipped), how do I know if they are fogs or driving lights?  Are the lenses marked differently for fogs or driving ones?
