Indicators after G60 conv.

Hi guys, at my wits end with this ! Everything else seems to be working ok. Just can't get any life out of the indicators whatsoever!

The light for the indicators goes solid green when the stalk is depressed up/ down but it doesn't click at all- not going through the relay ?

So after wiring everything up I've ISV etc as ignition live, and the injectors as a permanent live. But have these left over.

Solid yellow wire/ spade connector+ plug. Has no voltage.

And this rather fetching green& white / blue&pinkish colour wire that goes into a single spade connector+ plug. This one does have voltage

These related to my problem or is this something else entirely !

Cheers,
Adam.

As simple as this sounds check the fuse - this is exactly what happens when it blows. if it is not blown check that there is an ignition live there etc - - -

I had this when the blue/black wire that goes on the bottom corner of the hazard lights switch came off. There's the multiplug, then a separate terminal iirc

Right guys, just multi-metered the hell out of that fuse box!

It still turns over, fires and starts after jump starting the battery within 5 turns of the starter. So ISV, ECU etc is getting power ok RPM works on clocks etc

However !

I only have power to fuses:

1 - 4 reading 12v

5 - 10 reading 0v

11 - 19 reading 12v

20 - 22 reading 0v

Now this is worrying me a tad, as the fuse guide I have says that:

5 - Fuel Pump - 15amps - yet the fuel pump primes and works when it's running ?

9 + 10 - High beam lights and clocks indicator - 10 amps - both work @ high beam

21 + 22 - Low beam left/ right - again both work perfectly fine ?  :dontknow:

I'll get that wire checked now tidymike, to get it ruled out hopefully. 1980's wiring what a pain in the a** haha

check all the fuses, in particular #19. this is the ignition live for the hazard switch, indicators wont work without it. its the blue/black wire so check that has ignition live too.

yellow wire is probably for 0.3bar oil pressure switch, leave it for now though.

green/grey and blue/brown is fgor the handbrake warnign light, there should be a wire to the handbrake switch that plugs into this

Right checked all the fuses came up as follows (Their down a tad due to a relativity low battery I guess):

1 - 4 :11.93/94V
5 : 0V
6 : 0.1V
7 - 10 : 0V
11 - 14 : 11.94/95V
15 - 19 : 11.84/85V
20 : 0.25V
21 - 22 : 0V

Also checked the free wires at the back and found another……. from the dash loom

Green/Grey and Blue/brown : 0V
Yellow : 0V

New found one - Solid brown and a Brown/White to a single spade connector/plug : 3.4V (This be an earth?)

The blue/black wire to the back of the hazard switch is reading 11.94V also

have a look at my sig, jetta89.pdf. that should help track down the fuses and wires you mention. its not perfect for you as its mk2, but same fusebox so it should help get a handle on things at least.  best bet is get a brown mk1 haynes it has the wiring diagrams you need

It's like a foreign language lol But ill keep trying to work it out.

Also found another rouge wire to the right of the steering wheel, a single grey wire with a tiny female spade connector on it?

Ahh this whole car lark, only fun when it all works  :(

Cheers,
Adam.

ADI it may seem drastic but theres a couple of unmolested looms for sale on ebay about 25-30 quid then you can start afresh it looks like your wiring has been hacked togethor a bit mate, with the new loom and Paul H's wiring guide you can take your engine sensors and ECU and splice them to the mk1 quite easily. :-D

I've traced the brown/white and brown wire(s) that read 3.4v,

*Brown is on the large plug for the clocks
*Brown/white goes to the wiper stalk,

So guess their the MFA? and don't really need connecting to anything unless they are earths?

Yellow again I guess is for the oil pressure like you suggested as the oil light is permanently flashing lol

And the green/grey + blue/brown as you have identified is for the handbrake.

Only thing is what the heck is missing now lol, I can only think that there is a live connection missing somewhere as so meany fuses have no power to them!?

Aye been thinking of starting afresh with the loom, but its largely there it starts and runs ok, just indicators that are awol at the moment.

the small grey spade could be for the p-arking lights, look in the ignition switch for a socket 'p' with no wire. the brown/white wires you mention are earth for the dash and mfa stalk, they should run to the side of the head.

yah sounds liek oil pressure, it should run to the blue/black wire on the pressure sender on the side of the head.

if you have ignition live to the black/blue wire then id say the hazard switch has gone, i take it the hazards work ok? if so the wiring to the lights is all ok at least

Cheers for all the help rubjonny, you were right on the money again !

Earthed the brown + brown/white spade to the earth ring. - No sure if I should change this to somewhere else?

Reconnected the grey wire to the ignition switch, hey presto there is life! Left, right and hazards all now work  :D

Only thing, with the key out the ignition when you put the indicator up the corresponding light turns on at the front ? :dontknow:  This normal? haha

for the mfa/dash earth there should be a matching brown/white spade on the engine loom which then runs off to the head. but you can leave it where it is its not going to be a problem.

the grey wire is for the parking lights so i cant see how they could have fixed the rest of the indicators but hey ho

what you describe is the parking light system, so normal :)

Awesome the earth is staying there then haha  :D MFA's only gonna be used for the clock now anyways having a G60 in it.

Think it was the hazard switch completely! Not completing the circuit, swapped it for a spare I had and it sorted everything out. I took the old one apart infact, found it had no internal slider part…. so was never going to work lol!

Great stuff I started to think it was another quirk it had developed like its ability to choose when to start or not haha, nice thing to know about them parking lights!

Two other quick questions though!

The handbrake light, does the black wire from the dash connect to the fusebox at ign live? then the wire from the handbrake spade connect to the green/grey and blue/brown wire? confused my self! lol

And the yellow wire - 0.3bar oil press, what would this connect to being a G60 conversion ?

Cheers again, much appreciated!

yeah the black wire needs an ignition live, the green/grey and brown/blue is the earth for the light. the brown/blue goes off to the level switch in the fluid reservoir, the green/grey goes off to the light. then you run a wire from the handbrake lever switch to the spade connection. basically the green/grey is the earth for the light, which can be made either via the handbrake switch or the fluid level switch :)

pretty sure the 0.3 bar switch should be on the side of the head, it sits in a t piece for the charger oil pressure feed
