Ignition Switch

Hi

Our ignition switch has a intermitent fault it only works if you pull on it - not ideal.

Is it a difficult job to replace these? Also does anyone know which Haynes manual would cover a 1993 Cabriolet.

Haynes later MK2 manual for engine . Mk1 manual late for rest .


 

Yea can be a bit of a pain to change as you need to drill out the locking pins.

I should have said the key and barrel is seperate to the ignition switch .
Ignition switch is plastic with wires connected under the key looks like

this one on Ebay , key and barrel if they replacement its a drill out job . Again simple with the manual in hand ! Pulling on the key could indicate either at fault .

I've changed the plastic switch bit and it doesn't require any drilling. Remove steering wheel. Remove plastic cowling around steering. Remove stalks. The ign barrel/lock is held onto the column with a large-ish allen bolt. Remove and slide ign gubbins off and then its just a small philips screw that holds the plastic switch to the bottom of the barrel.

Note that later Cabrios had a different steering wheel and poss ign barrel/lock and I seem to remember someone else having a 'mare trying to swap the plastic switch :dontknow:

Thought i'd just update you all on this if anyone else has a similar problem.

As i mentioned the ignition switch had an intermitent problem, however this was only due to one of the prongs being loose. hence why it only worked when you pulled the switch down.

When i took off the wiring connector block and all the steering shroud etc it became even more clear how time consuming a job removing the ignition switch would be. especially when only one connection was a 'bit wobbly' hence why it was an intermitent fault.

It also turned out that the plastic clips which hold the connector block in place were slightly broken.

To solve the issue i put a 'dab' of super glue at the base of the 'prong' on the ign switch which was moving so it stayed in place then repaired the broken clips on the connector block, waited for the glue to dry, connected it back up and hey prest it fault cured.

Obviously this was probably a one off but it has worked and may be worth a try if you notice the clips are broken from someone previouly being heavy handed.

The glue i used was the araldite  type stuff which you mix and suitable for both plastic and metal.

Hope this helps anyone with a similar issue especially when i took it too my local garage and he wouldn't  touch it and instead bypassed the switch as a tempory measure, only for the fuse to blow two days later!
