Should pull off with the puller . Or if you are rough bashed of gently with a suitable hammer .

Try soaking over night in WD40 then try in the morning .

If you mean the black plasticy thing then you can put an open ended spanner (or 2) under it and gently twist it off. Its can be a bit stiff though sometimes, its not splined though I dont think.

it will come off but they are really really f***ing tight. there is a special puller vw uses but  if you can get a bearing puller on it should work, but it needs to be big enough to put some serious pressure on the collar, your other option is to get a new one and grind the old one off. have done a few of these its the same on some polos and later golfs, and it can be a sod of a job, really annoying thing is once the collar is off its a five minute job to change the switch

Timely thread, I'm trying to do the same on my 1980 GTI.

Have got everything off except the metal housing.  :banghead:

It's only the later Cabrios that have the collar, it's fitted on the MK1 column to enable it to use the later MK2 wheel.. The 1980 ign switch metalwork simply unclamps via two (Allen?) bolts.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Hi guys and thanks for the replies
I have now sorted the problem  :D
What i had to do was: Heat up the collar with a blow torch for approx 5 mins, then i put a set of mole grips just behind the lip of the collar to give me more to pull on and used a set of 2 legged bearing pullers, the collar came off with ease, (was told to spray some wd40 into where the collar was and leave for 24 hours but i opted for the blow torch)
To put the collar back on i used a socket which was big enough to go over the steering column but small enough to push the collar back on and tapped with a hammer till it was back far enough…
So happy day's everything is now working again and i'm not starting the car with a screwdiver via the new ignition switch lol
Thanks again to all those who tried to help  8)
