Ignition live fuse?

Was farting around with the wires behind the stereo and some wires touched, there was a pop and I seemed to lose ignition live! Now when I turn my lights on it seems to kill the dash. Lights, rev counter and trip computer all go off. Also the horn has stopped working, I hear the relay click and the earth of the horn goes to ground when the button is pushed but cannot find any voltage going to the horn, not even as far as the fuse for the horn.
Is there anything along the lines of an ignition live fuse? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What do you mean ignition live fuse? Several devices are fused (some are not) on a Mk1 Golf. Some of these devices only come on with the ignition, some come on all the time, etc.

Its possible you have burnt an important wire that was unfused.

I was just wondering if there was such a thing? Only the ignition live of the stereo plug was not live anymore!
Don't like the sound of the blown a wire thing!

This is why you MUST have one of the terminals of the battery disconnected when working on or near electrics….

Ignition live is still getting to your fusebox if you hear the relief relay and horn relay working

Should there be voltage at the fuse for the horn tho? ALS on another note, the dash dying was happening before the pop, the reason I was farting around!

look at all the fuses on your fusebox. the stereo doesnt have an ignition live as standard so i cant tell you which one to check specifically, so start at #1 and work your way across. use a multimeter to check them as sometimes they get a hairline crack in that is hard to see.

with dash dying look at the earth for the cluster, if its got an mfa it will earth to the side of the head, look for any brown or brown/white wires. if not it earths behind the fusebox, probably to the earth claw above the fusebox.

finally try adding a thick/braided earth from the rocker cover to one of the coil mounting bolts, this sometimes helps with a dodgy cluster

Cheers John, it was the earth to the cluster failed, I now have a dash at night again! Just the horn, clock and vdo gauges to sort now!
