How to wire Spot lights up!

Does anyone have a wiring picture or photographs of how this is meant to be connected to the main headlamps??

If you want to do it the VW way, the mk2 had a short loom which plugged into the existing headlamp connector and split into 2 connectors, one for the main lamp and one for the auxiliary lamp. This is a crap way of doing it. Much better to have 2/3 relays. 1 for the dip beam and 1 for the main, with an extra one for the lamps if you are so inclined. Wire them direct to the alternator for max voltage at the bulbs and see the difference.

I used a wiring kit produced by ring, which comes complete with a relay all pre-wired, plenty of wire and instructions on what goes where. I adapted it a little, as the kits designed to be run from a seprate switch, but I wired the switch feed into the headlight main beam circuit so the spots come on with main beam as intended.

The important bit to remember is putting in a fuse if you're taking the power for the lamps directly from the battery (best way) as if you don't, and a wire chaffs away on a sharp bit, or the circuit develops a fault and creates a short, you'll have a fire in your engine bay.

The other important bit to remember is not to wire the lamps directly to the main beam circuit in the car, as you'll overload it and melt the wire/blow the fuses or both. You must use a relay of some sort.

The wiring kit I used is still available from Halfords for about ?14 I think which isn't too bad really.

Think of it this way, the thin original wire goes to a rusty old earth, or you could fit a nice meaty wire to a nice new clean earth. Your choice. Always remember that the alternator is the source of all electricity on your car. The battery is merely there to start the engine and smooth the alternator output. Lots of people tell you to connect your wires to the battery. This is OK for an ICE install where you need a good DC supply. Your lamps are not bothered about a bit of ripple, they just want max volts. I don't know about the big block engine, but the small one has an alternator earth lead bolted on top of the engine mount. This is where you want the earth to go to. It gives the shortest path from the supply to the load and back again.

If you've got a good circuit, the voltage should be the same wherever you measure it in your car, whether that be at the back of the alternator, or at the battery. I measured mine just now, and there was no difference between the measurement at the alernator and the measurement at the battery, and there was 0.2v drop off at the back lights probably due to old wiring.

in answer to your question c11rgd, I would use a separate earth to the body or to the battery and not earth it on the same wires at the headlamps as these wires have already got equipment running on them, and also as the wires are going to be old, they will have a higher resistance so the lights will proabably be dimmer than earthing them directly to the battery or body.

Also if you got too much earthing through the one wire you will most probably melt the wire. Better to be safe and use a separate dedicated earth.
