How to connect cigerette lighter - help needed!

I need to have power to my cigerette lighter (i dont smoke) but because i need my satnav to be able to charge itself

Can anyone shed some light onto how to get it working?

Silly question, but have you checked the earth?

ok….I have a screwdriver type thing with a bulb in it, rather like the clear ones you can get for about a quid…However it has a wire with a small bulldog clip coming from the top! What I would do then to check the earth would be, clip to the cig lighter and then tip of the screw driver tester to a known live! If the cig lighter is earthed then the light will come on in the tester! If not, check where the earth from the cig lighter is coming from and re earth if necessary! Hope that helps!  

Either that or earth the clip to a known earth ie the door hinge or strap, then touch the tester to the bottom of the cig lighter, that will check the live! You should be able to tell either way where the fault must be!  

The connection to the cigarette lighter is only two wires in one plastic connection: the earth (brown) and the supply (blue IIRC).

The easiest thing to do is to pull the ashtray and the surround out and see if it's connected behind. If it is, then you may need to check the fuse.

You'll need a multimeter if you want to do some accurate poking about to see what the problem is. Try Maplin if you need to buy one.

Push the cigarette lighter in. and if it heats up you have power already.
 If not check the fuse, probably 22 (10A).
