Not sure what number the relay is (take them out 1 by 1 until the music stops?) but your problem is probably the wire has shorted in the steering wheel or steering column. From memory VW wire their horns up the ?wrong? way around compared to everyone else. The horn is wired to 12v +ve permanently is earthed at the horn push on the steering wheel. When there is a short the horn sounds all the time.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

i didnt want to take them out one by one .i thought somebody here would know the number. i disconnected  hornpush on steering wheel made no difference to horn going off.Yes you are correct in saying its the earth side which switches the horn, but as the horn was still going off with this disconnected i want to replace the relay as i think it may have a internal fault.anyone know the number ?

Are you sure it has a relay in it?

On an '83 GTI, the horn relay is in position 6 on the relay board (top row, right-hand-most relay position). I think that the number marked on it is "53", but I'm only 90% sure of that bit.

Note that only Golfs with dual-tone (twin) horns have a horn relay - GTI's (and GLS's?) - lesser models with one horn are wired direct, with just a fuse in the circuit (position 16, 15 amp, by the way).

relay

looking at fuse box face on…….top right corner, usually silver.
when u pull relay out, on the underside u will see 30, 85,86,87 on each terminal melted into plastic……thats 100% the relay.
I would also check ur fuses…….makes sure they are all in and properly seated….worthwhile pulling them all out one by one, check them & put them all back in quite firmly.

Hope this helps
