horn not working,

:banghead: cant get the horn working on my mk 1 1983 1800 gti it has continuity through the wires ive replaced the horn think its an earth prob bit puzzled now anyone got any ideas or had a similar prob many thanks .

I think there was a long thread on horn problems in the old forum. Try doing a search there:

First thing - check the steering column is earthed!! On my LHD this was missing so I put in a short wire between steering column and car body/steering rack clamp. Hey presto it worked!

Test it with the key in the lock and turned so the steering lock pin is withdrawn.  After extensive testing I found mine was earthed when the key was out, but not with the key in and ignition on! Took me hours to trace that fault!! Can't remember how I got round it now, but it now works.   

Also check the relay if fitted pretty obvious I know, but I don't know what you've checked already so start with the simple stuff. I know all golfs with twin tone horns had a relay, not sure about other models.

I spent days tring to get my horn working - eventually traced it to corrosion where the wire enters the female spade connector that connects to the horn connector!!
