HORN KEEPS SOUNDING WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL HELP

since changing the steering wheel on my mk1 golf gti the horn keep's sounding when i'm turning the steering wheel
had to remove the large spline adapter because it had a later steering wheel on the car and i put on a genuine mk1 wheel
is there some sort of bush or washer that should go on before the genuine wheel?
anyone got any idea's .

I think there is a plastic spacer.
However I had the same problem and it was because the steering wheel is slightly concentric.
Take the wheel off and look at the horn tab, when I turned my wheel it shorted the tab to the bottom screw that holds the stalk assembly in place shorting and sound ing the horn.
You need to bend the tab back up and put something to insulate the screw head, some tape etc or remove the screw?

yeah you may need to fit the splastic spacer, spring and circlip from an early mk1. some wheels will push on too far without these bits fitted

hi all
thanks for the help
going to order the plastic sleeve ( spacer ) as it is missing because of the larger wheel and wheel adaptor
the steering wheel was going on to far and shorting on the horn/screw heads. it should have a 2mm to 4mm gap between the wheel
and column switch's.
thanks again for the help
cheers

Remember though the copper tab, must contact the horn ring on the bottom of the wheel or you wont have any horn at all.

the plastic spacer alone may not be enough you need the spring and circlip too! iirc the spacer doesnt come near the splines so it wont stop the wheel, you need the circlip that presses just under where the splines finish this stops the wheel going on too far. the spring is needed because it keeps the column under tension which helps reduce play

Sorry for brining this old topic up,

But I had an hour of hell travelling through central London with that steering problem. :)

I have got a VW Corrado steering wheel on, which looks exactly the same and fitted perfectly…. I had the same problem with my old original steering wheel, but becasue it was so soft and used, i thought it was bending and I swapped it…

The problem was solved for a year with the new one, but now I have this problem that whenever I turn on my indicators the horn sounds, and any turn will beep the horn as well :D

I had a lot of angry pedestrians waving at me for that as well :D

check the screws holdign the stalks are tight, check the condition of the horn contact tab, and look at the wiring underneath for previous wire bodges
