Yes, as Yomp says blue LEDs wernt available back then. I had a Mk2 once and even that didnt have a blue LED, it was white with a blue filter sleeved over the top.

later mk1s and mk2s dont use led for the main beam, its just a normal 12v bulb with a blue cover.
the early yellow ones are leds I think, as above blue leds didnt exist when they made them, or if they did they were very expensive

You just have to remove the black plastic LED 'shield' then you can get to the bulb.

I did mine a few weeks ago as it's an MOT failure now!! http://www.motchecklist.co.uk/mot-2012-changes.html

The bulb was ok but there was a break in the circuit board somewhere so soldered a thin wire from 'pin 7' on the circuit board up to the high beam resistor and works fine now.

Thanks Chris. Does that mean I don't have to disturb the blue plastic circuit???

Would check the bulb first. Take the high beam bulb out its just a push fit and pop a red led in its place and see if it works. If not it's the circuit.

Does the high beam warning light have to be fitted in the dash?
I fitted one on a temporary basis until I get a bit more spare time by the light switch?

as long as the warning is visible and you tell tester the new location you should be fine, there are no lines in the book that say where it should be just that its visible to driver
