Help needed with this wiring mess

Post

Hi guys,

Its been a while but now i have a bit of time im starting to try to get my head around this mess of wiring i have found at the front by the battery tray.

Hopefully this works and you can see enough.
I have a blue wire coming from the alternator which is knackered and the previous owner has just twisted together and it runs back into the loom on the right handside of the battery. Is this right and where does it run to?
Also there is a small fused relay that i found just taped up which is also knackered. It has a brown wire which has been crushed and doesnt connect anywhere. Any ideas where it is supposed to go?

Am i right in thinking the blue wire from the alternator goes to warning lamp

Id say that Brown wire goes to Ground. Theres usually a Ground connection on the chassis leg just below the Battery Tray. Looking at the way the end is id say it was just stripped right back and wrapped around the bolt that holds the other ground wires in place.

by the looks of it that relay is for your inner spot lights, what i would do is rip it all out then buy or make a relay lighting loom which includes the spotlight wiring

Cheers guys. It got too dark to carry on messing around with it all so will have to wait for the weekend.

Rudjohnny- she doesnt have any inner spots on her. She is an old 1980 S1 GLi so i dont think they had them did they?
saying that i believe the connections for inner spots are on the other side too i cant remember to be fair.

yeah yours didnt have them standard that relay is an aftermarket addition. at that age you would have fogs in the grille if it was offered as standard I'd have thought.

if it was me all of that relay wiring would go directly into the bin, its nothing but a fire hazard

I had a feeling but was'nt a 100% sure they only had the single lights the age mine is.

I had a bit of time after work earlier to have a better look, and like you said Rudjonny im gonne strip it out and make an upgrade loom for it.

Im stripping the fan and rad out at the weekend anyway so makes sense to the upgrade at the same time.

Im gonna wire the connections for the inner spots in the new loom even tho im keeping it with singles just in case.

Already ordered 2 12v 30a fused relays and have sleeving, shrink tube and connectors ect but not 100% sure about what gauge wire.

Am i right in saying 17a will do it based on 100watts divided by 12volts = 8.3 amps and thats with much more powerful bulbs than standard?

i just bought lots of 25a thinwall, as then it could be used for other shizzle as well. its about the same thickness as the oem headlight wires but more modern.

17a should be alright though, after all the original fuses were 10a so as long as its a fair bit better than that you'll be reet!

what I used to do when i made these was use 3 fuses and relays, 1 per side for dip and 1 for all 4 mains. you have to use beefier fuse for that though obviously! you could go with 4 relays but I thought that was overkill really, but I prefer to use 1 per side for dip so you wont loose all your lights if a fuse/relay blows!

Right, i finally got a new loom together only using 2 relays. 1 for dipped and 1 for high.

All lights were working as they should before i started but now the new loom is in i have high beam but no low beam? any ideas?

Ive triple checked the wiring and relays etc but still no joy.

check the fuses for the dipped beam, maybe they popped while you were busy messing
