heater problems

Any ideas why my heater blowers would just stop working?
Its an early mk1 gti and its puzzled me
the speed switch clicks ok 1 2 and 3
and the fuse seems ok although not tested it

switch may click but that doesn't mean it's working. pull the plug off the back and connect the right pins to see if it works.

Try the switch - if in doubt get a new switch - they cost a few quid from GSF. If it still doesn't work, it could be the rheostat on the back of the motor - but test the switch first!

Try taking the protective cover off (the one inside the engine bay) clearing any debris and rotate the fan by hand. Sometimes if they are not used for a while they can stick. This is what happened to mine & after moving it by hand it started working again and I haven't had any problems since.  :dontknow:

Can i high-jack this thread, i have an 83 gti which i thought id take for a spin for the first time in a few months today and i had the same problem with my fans. It did it last winter but was fine in the summer as i use them all summer to get the hot air out of the engine bay as it always runs a little hot. They worked when i started the car today but stoppped when it got upto to temp, i even gave it a little tap on the dash and they started again for a bit! Ive checked the fuses, rotated the motor by hand and have removed the switch and will replace tommorrow but if that doesent work any ideas please, as its an undriveable steam machine without them!! She is running a bit hot and actually overheated when running without the hot air fans on even though its 0oC outside and the bonnet was up??

Probably earths, take em off polish the connectors with a pcb rubber and it should be sorted. You sure its overheating I have the same thing with mine I'm sure it isnt overheating and its just a guage/thermo sender problem…

Interesting post that andy77 I have a few of those gremlins myself and although I'm sure that I DID clean them up it was a while ago now and itd not in everyday use.

Can you tell me about that brown earth strap that goes to the cam cover as I don't recall seeing one on mine, where is that supposed to go then?

GTi models had the earth strap for MFA function .

Just an update, took the car out tonight after ignoring all the great electrical advice from Andy77 opting for the "i like my quirky 25 year old VW that everything works on but never all at the same time" and whilst whiping the condensation away from my windscreen with the industrial kitchen roll i have resigned myself to carrying around with me (blower  still doesent work), the headlights died, in the pitch black rain of rush hour!!

In short tommorow will be spent carrying out the electrical cleaning checklist that i am not looking forward to.  :banghead:

"disconnect intake trunking and valve cover connection from airflow sensor unit, undo clip at back on bottom of sensor unit and lift to access the two bolts underneath"

its just the bit above im struggling with, specifically the bold type , the instructions are great but i am not - can anyone elaborate please

If all fails to get that blower going, pop up the bonnet, remove the rain cover and give the motor casing a few bangs with the hammer. If that doesn't work keep going with the hammer.
