Heater only work on 3????

As the title says, my heater only works on setting 3??? I've bought and fitted a new heater switch and it still only works on setting 3 but the heater is blowing hot air? Its a 88 Gti cabriolet. Car has been sat for a while. Some say to spray WD40 while the stting is on 2 and spin the blower manually?
Cheers guys

on newer cars they have a resister that controls the speed, this is probably whats wrong with it, speeds 1 and2 go through the resister, speed 3 will have i feed straight to it! not sure where the resister is tho on these!

Thanks "steveo1". Anyone else know where the resistor might be?

Resistors are on the motor itself. As far as i know they always are too. On mine they're cylindrical.

As much advice on restoring a Series 1 as possible please

If your going to spray the motor with WD40 make sure you only get it on the bearings, as you can knacker the bushes on th motor.

I've had a similar problem, but my fault turned out to be the switch!

I've had so many problems with my blower fan that I've just wired it straight up to the battery now, via an inline fuse.

Seems a new switch, cleaned the connectors on the resistor, WD40 and a little help to start the blower spinning did the trick??????
