Heater motor squeaks and squeals

After about five minutes of my heater blower's being on, it often starts first to squeak ever more often, and eventually to squeal continuously.  Not loudly, just very annoyingly.  It does this at the slowest fan speed (sometimes at the medium speed, never at the highest speed).

This the second cabrio I've had that's developed this noise, so I suspect it's a common problem.

I'm told it's to do with the brushes, not the bearings.  It seems to be sensitive to the movement of the car (braking hard can sometimes start it).

VW wants about £200 (!) for a new blower, so that's out.  If blowers start to do this as they get old, a used one probably isn't the answer either.

Can anyone recommend a fix, please?  It would be nice to cure this problem before autumn arrives!

Thanks.

Geo.

Not sure if its the same problem. My GTI would squeak for 1st few mins then stop making funny noises, assummed it was worn bearings. Was going to replace motor with one from a later Caddy but before I did I squirted some spray oil/grease down the sides/ends of the shaft as a temp fix and its been OK for a couple of years. (only use it as a summer toy so if in daiy use may not have been as successful)

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I had the same problem with mine…its a common problem as Early-1800 suggests it's worn bearings. You can try oil on the shafts but this is a temp fixz and wont last long as i found out. I eventually ended up chaniging the motor to a whole new one. Easy How to here

Hope that helps :D

remove the heater mesh from the scuttle, and check its not full of leaves. then put motor on full till it squeeks, then spray the bearings either end with proper silicone lubricant spray. Carry on till it stops leaking. dont use wd40 as it'll be bugger all help as its a water dispersant, not a lubricant ;)
