There is a "resistor" attached to the actual blower unit that you can get to in the scuttle tray, I have heard that this can fail (Never actually seen one fail though  ), though it is more likely to be the actual switch. Take it out and give the contacts a good clean.

My resistors knackered but only on position 1. Hairy's had loads of problems with his heater fan and switch and there are posts about it on the old site. You can test the resistor with a multimeter.

My windows got extra steamy the other day!!!

Before you say any anything I better explain! The 2 drain holes in the scuttle area in front of the windscreen blocked. I check them regularly as i know its a common problem but it only took a week or two for them to block with leaves. The water that collected went through the heater air intake and blew onto the windscreen and floor! Thought my heater matrix had gone at first!

Sounds like mights be problem with mine, heater works fine in position 2 and 3 but nothing in 1. Is the resistor easy to get to/replace?

Here's the post from the old site that hairyarse started wit hpossible remedies. I might find out how much a new loom is from VW otherwise chop a resistor out of a scrapped car and solder it in.

Can you start it on 2 or 3, then move it back to postition 1 to get it working at 1?

If you can then it's worn contacts/ brushes on the heater motor.

If not then it's got to be positive feed to the resistor. Basically There are two resistors in series,

on position one current is fed through both,
on position two current is fed through one
on position 3 they are both bypassed.

Take a look at the wiring diagram, it's really quite straightforward arrangement.

although b4 i do this….i havent tried the new resistor in conj with a fan swich that i know 100% works from my other car!

a couple of kitchen towls and a chammy withh do the trick for now

Have you tried slinging a couple of wires straight from the battery to the fan?

I did that to get the thing moving again, and sprayed loads of wd40 into it.
