headlights problem

hi all
i was wondering if any one could help me with a big pain in the rrrs
ive got a mk1 1.6 gti single grill  and all of a sudden my head lights have gone potty.if i stick my side lights on evrything is fine also my main beams but as soon as i put my full beams on the passenger side light goes back to side light,as the wireing from the fuse box had been cut and joined  i decided to replace it  witch i have but the problem still remains.
ive changed the bulbs,main headlight switch and the storks but it still dosnt work has any body come across this problem before and if so could you sheed some light on the problem as its doin my bonce in

sounds like a bad earth mate

or put a meter on the connector and make sure that he full beem as getting a feed.

as when you put your full beem on the main beem circuit collapses.

When you put your main (or full as you called it) beam on, the dipped (or main as you called it) beam circuit is switched off, There is only ever one or the other on, not both on unless you hold the stick forwards.

I'd say check the fuses, as the headlights are fused independantly of each other (4 fuses in total, plus one for the side lights), so if the fuse has gone for the left hand light main beam, then it will go back to side light when you put the main beam on.

had the same problem on mine, sourced the problem to the fusebox so I bridged the connection from the wire at the back of the fusebox to the fuse.. worked a treat

I'd definately start by checking the fuses as Maniac said
