Headlight question

Post

So, the story goes. I've never had any issues or any reason to believe that my headlights were anything other than working.

I've just treated the car and my night eyes to an updated headlight loom, and discovered a problem.

When I switch my lights switch to side lights, the dipped beam bulbs light. And then when I switch to full dipped lights, there is no difference. I had never noticed before (and discovered when I reverted back to my original loom) that my dipped beam bulbs light up when side lights are selected.

I'm assuming its a relay, but can someone point me in the direction that I should be looking.

Any help greatly received.

regards, Gav.

guys, this is because your sidelight powered headlight resistor is still in circuit.  Your old headlights would have had the dipped beam 'glow' when your sidelights were switched on.  Many just failed over time, so plenty people doing the conversion simply wouldn't have noticed.
You have a few choices on this.
1. You can leave the dipped switched with the sidelights.
2. You can disconnect the dipped resistor, this way you get small 5W sidelights only on first click of the headlights switch (the part power through the resistor is enough to pull in the relays, but not illuminate fully the lamps)
3. You can wire in the resistor to the new lighting circuit. Assuming the unit can cope with the larger lamps (if fitted) this will give you that 'glow' from the dipped beams.

Hope this explains your issues chaps.

PS. Mine's the same, and I'm presently running on option 1, but will be doing option 2 or 3 at some point…

I believe the resistor is fixed to the bulkhead up near the brake servo. Once I get round to correcting mine, I'll let you know. It's a ceramic tube with a wire wound element, fag packet size.

ive got that on mine, wondered what it was for, i went for the Hid conversion kit on mine, nice n bright, takes naff all power and they light up the road nicely the dip beam lights up on the sidelight switch still which is annoying but causes no worries
