head lights on, power to cluster off?????????

every time i turn my head lights on my cluster looses all power. the clock turns off so does the revo and the LEDs but the other lights on the dash are uneffected?
if this is an earthing issue or a power in put issue which wires should I be looking at behind the cluster?

Could be a faulty headlight switch ? Power to the clocks comes from a black wire activated by the ignition switch . Check switch as above , check for any wiring bodges [carried out by previous owners] .

Not uncommon to have burnt loom wiring causing strange problems .

Start with simple things

what even thought the cluster works fine when the lights are off? I'll check it though chudd. I tried changing the light switch yesterday but didn't do anything.
Although I did find that if i disconnected the gray blue wire on the plug to the head light switch and turned my lights on the dials still got power but there was no illumination to the cluster?

Have you by any chance connected an ancillory item, such as the radio to the grey/blue wire?

The grey/blue is a variable +12v that goes to the illuminations (i.e panel lights) and works from the adjuster just above the light switch.

I've had this happen on a couple of golfs in the past, it turned out to be an earth wire that attatches to the rear left stud of the rocker cover.

Might be worth checking this before you start pulling things apart.
