Guages

Post

Hi everyone, currently getting my golf ready for the road, and was having a few electrical issues with my guages. Traced this to a bad earth wire. Repaired the wire. However now getting a few more issues, and have found that the individual terminals on the connector of my dials are all corroded and one them has pretty much completely gone. I think pulling the plug off the back has pretty much finished it off. So I need a new set. However the set that was originally fitted to my car were Motometer ones, now I have seen some VDO sets out there. Just before I go out and buy another set, I just want to check that the only difference between the two, are who that made them, and that the wiring to the plug is the same, and the plug from my car will fit?
Any info will be much appreciated.
Thanks guys

Any pics? It would be cheaper to find someone with a soldering iron, and get the terminal soldered back on.

I will try and get some pics up tomorrow, problem is, it doesn't have prongs/terminals as such. It has a flexible PCB in the plug with thin copper strips that go along it.

Ok, the vdo's have spades on the back. They are fairly simple to wire up, just crimp some spades onto your old loom.

when you say gauges, you mean the dash cluster right? if so both vdo and motormeter were used it seems random as to which ones you got. try to get vdo the general consensus is they're better than motormeter :)

Are both sets interchangeable?

Hi sorry guys, yeah the dash cluster with the speedo rev counter. Thanks for the info, I will go for what I can get if the only difference is the manufacturer.
Now just need to get a pair!!

yes vdo and motormeter are interchangeable, mk2 polo clocks are also the same, but no mfa. only thing is you need to get the right type of clocks to match your car.

early mk1 MFA has the big MPG gauge and shift light, later GTI clocks do not. also early GTI just have mfa button on stalk, 1/2 switch is on the clocks. fit late clocks to early car and you wont be able to switch between modes 1 and 2, but everything else will work (loosing the big mpg gauge obviously, but the digital mpg gauge will still work)

if you fit early clocks to later car the mpg gauge and shift light wont work, but everything else will. the 1/2 button on your stalk will no longer work but the one on the clocks will :)

if you dont have a gti then any set of clocks will do, just the mfa will not work (unless you add the wiring yourself)

the vdo ones seem to last the best, but vdo ones can still fail
