GTI temperature gauge in console not working...running hot?

I really need some help after a year of hard work am nearly there, even have an MOT. But heres my problem, the temperature gauge on the dash works, but the one in the centre console does not. I need this to work so I can read the actual temperature to check if I am really running too hot.

My main conected problem is sometimes the temperature gauge goes right up, mostly it is between mid way (normal?)and three quarters, you can go for a varied drive and its fine. Then sometimes it will suddenly go up.The fan comes in at three quarters.I have the right mix of anti freeze and its not loosing fluid.

I have changed the thermostat (gen VW), expansion cap (blue gen VW), fan switch and I think the radiator is brand new, I need to know the colour of the wire for the console temp gauge and where it goes. Then a clue if it is then indeed running hot.

Can anybody who knows there stuff help me please?

Your guage reading could be normal the guage on a mk1 can read quite high but is normal .

If you want another guage you will need a new sender [look at alternative senders on the market ]
or use the old one and have no dash guage .

sounds like its operating normally

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Hi, Thanks, its only that sometimes the gauge goes right up, I am really worried that it will blow the head gasket.

I have three dials in the centre console, including water temp in degrees, is this standard, if so where is this wired two and does anybody know the colour of the wire iside the engine bay.

Just waiting for my cover note and I am on the road tomorrow, just hoping it won't get too hot.
