Gti keeps cutting out once warm - please help!

Hey guys,

First off, sorry for war & peace. Here goes

The other day I was driving along the motorway when suddenly I lost all power & the car died. I managed to get over to the hard shoulder so I could check the car over to see what was wrong.

One stopped, I checked all the obvious things. Belts, battery, plenty oil, sufficient water if not a little low so nothing to worry about there. So, after sitting for a little while & thinking what it could be I tried turning it over & it started fine. I tried driving again but again it cut out a little bit down the road.

After another couple of attemps I realised it was as soon as the car was heating up it was cutting out. The temp wasn't up that high & it didn't seem like the fan was coming on.

As soon as it was cutting out it would start again but cut out a little later.

Has anyone had this problem before, could it be a dodgy thermostat or fan switch thats causing an automatic cut off??
Any help would be greatly welcomed.

Cheers

Carl

Try a new coil or borrow one for a bit. I have had this problem before and the coil sorted it.

Heard of something similar - the ignition control module was not fixed down to its heatsink (in the plenum chamber, passenger side) and it overheated.  The car wouldn't work until it cooled down again.

Would be a DX engine.  All the comment above are valid.  I'd also check the starainer in the back of the pump if there is one and check if you can find any water in the fuel system.

I had a similar problem once when the tank was 1/4 full - turned out to be water in the fuel, pump and accumulator.  8O

No leaking filler neck so i guess it was just rubbish petrol

Hi Folks

Glad to say the problems now fixed, drained the fuel tank & changed the fuel pump last night & its going great again just in time for the Scottishvag meet at knockhill this weekend.

Thanks to all that helped.

Don't know if its the exact same one but I'm sure you can use one from the fords if need be. don't really know if I like to use something from a ford though

Suppose, if its gonna get the thing fixed I probably would

 yeah don't get me wrong ford's are not the most reliable but never thought they had fuel issues (correct me if I'm wrong).. and if they have basically the same pump from a different manufacturer it may be a good 'mod' to improve reliability  :dontknow:

Tbh mate, don't really know about fords but your right, it'd be worth doing this if you could get hold of a ford pump.

I'll see how this one gets on, you've got to remember that was the original one that came off the car yesterday so 22 years of service, its done alright
