Gauges

Hi, Ive just brought a mk1, and the person who I brougt it from very kindly gave me a set of gauges that fit into the bottom centre consol.  First of were these genuin on a mk1???  There is a blank panel, but remove this and there are three holes ready to accept the gauges.  Second, has anyboy got a clue how to wire these up properly??  If they are genuine should they not wire into the fuse board etc.  They have the vw/audi sign on them, all thats on the back is two plugs on each gauge with a length of wire.

thanks, joe

They're not genuine, they were always a dealer fit option, if your car had it. Also, depends what gauges you have - original looking VDO ones in black and white, or audi ones with the 0-5bar oil pressure? Wiring is simple enough but you'd need senders too.

Hi, as long as they are ment for a mk1 then thats ok.  The ones I have are oil 0-5 bar, temp 60-170, and volts 8-16, are these of an audi then.  Just going slighty of topic the fact that the holes are there ready to accept the gauges is cool in my eyes, I wonder if the mk6 golf comes with holes/appertures ready to accept aftermarket parts/gauges/etc.

Ive seen the guide in the electics section, what im after is a wire-wire guide, etc as im not used to the layout of the mk1 golf yet.

thanks

What model and year is it?

Wiring diagram below. Just make sure you get the correct senders

Hi, thanks for the reply.  It is a 1983 gti.  Is it better to wire up to the ignition or the relay plate???

Anyone know what vw/audi to take the double oil pressure switch from, im not going to the stealers.  Is there a gsf or euro car part number for one??

O.K, ive read all the guides, diagrams etc.  What I want to know is the following….

1)How do you join the wire to the lighting track, do you cut and spice into the lighting loom, or is there a spare terminal on the lighting track to plug into, either way which wire/terminal did you use??

2)In the above diagram do you earth straight to the battery's negative, or just an earth point (I think just an earth point but the diagram say battery)

3)Have most people connected the gauges to the ignition switch,  if so where on the back of the ignition barrel??

Thanks, Joe

I've got the gauges installed in the centre console but haven't wired them up yet. Think I'll possibly do a 'how to' thread if I manage to get them working, can't believe there hasn't been one done by now  8O
With a bit of luck I'll be attempting it in the next few weeks, if time allows. The guy that sold me the gauges kindly 'pre-wired'  them for me so hopefully that'll make it a bit easier. From what he told me two wires go into the engine bay - one to the oil pressure sender & one to the temp sender, they also need a feed from the ignition circuit & an earth. Hopefully once I've had a chance to have a look at it I'll have a better idea whats going on, then again maybe not !!
