fuel pump relay?

hi there,

i'm new to this forum so i thought i'd start by saying hello to you all

only a couple of weeks ago i recently became a proud owner of my first vw and was fortunate enough for it to be a 1983 mk1 gti.

however lol, i was unable to start her at the begginig of last week.

the engine was turning over fine and i've trouble shooted it down to the fuel pump. the pump fails to operate. however my uncle used a battery and wires to charge it directly the pump began to work and the car started! but as soon as the battery was disconnected the engine cut out. my uncle is aa ford mechanic so tried his best to help me with a car he wasn't very farmiliar with. he advised me that it may be a dodgy relay. when we removed the relay (5) it appeared there had been some water damage to the chip inside. i am going to replace the relay as soon as i can get hold of one but was wondering if anyone had experienced this issue before and if it could be a well known issue?

any advice is greatly appreciated as i've only had her a couple of weeks and am gutted that i cant drive her.

thanks,

Stu

The usual thing to try to get it up and running is to short out the connections on the relay/board to find out if it works 'with a working relay' maybe its a wiring fault? Also if you turn the ignition it should click (and I think latch on for a period of time)

What you mentioned would seem to suggest the relay however.
