fuel pump priming on gti, when ignition goes on

hey guys, first post here!

just bought myself a mk1 gti. my first one since 98!! (had a corrado for 5 years, and a mk2 16v before that)

anyhoo it's a bit of an "unfinished project" but it only needs a few bits to finish.

it has a brace of wiring issues though:

the fuel pump doesn't whirrrrrr-click when you switch on the ignition - it is currently wired to a switch. what causes this?

i figured it would be the fuse box, so i bought a new one. got the underdash tray to swap it over today, and the one that's on it looks like it's been replaced recently, but not by the previous owner. is this just a case of a wonky relay? also the wipers only work on one speed, the rear wiper stays on permanently if you activate it and the horn doesn't work.

but one thing at a time.

what's the sp with the fuel pump then?

thanks in advance!!!

Welcome :D

Have a read of THIS,  It shows you how to test the relay point on the fuseboard.  You can illiminate it from the equation then.  It could also be the pump it sellf, do you have 12v at the terminals on the fuel pump?

The wiper points sound like relay issues too possibly.

Rear wipers on Mk 1's are 'on' or 'off' which I find really annoying, especially when the rear screen keeps getting spray on it, but you don't want the wiper on all the time (OCD or something?)
Easy solution is to fit a diferrent relay - I bought one from a dealer years ago, but for my current car I got one out of a Scirocco, which gives intermittent wipe after one press, wash/4 wipes after a long press, just like on the MK2 and Mk3 Golfs…unfortunately the relay from these doesn't seem to work, as it has too many pins to fit the fusebox.
I'll get the number off my relay and post it one day soon - this is one of the easiest and most satisfying mods to do!
