probably the sender has gone on the blink - before messing with that check your wiring.
It might be that if you connect the two wires that go on the sender (through round plate under rear seat) the gauge will read full - can anyone verify that? This will confirm wiring and gauge is OK or not.

I think you're right Rich, it should read full when you link the wires.

I wouldn't connect them directly together as this may damage the gauge. (same as the temp gauge). 47 ohms across should indicate full tank, 220 ohms should put the needle to the reserve mark.

I think that's what you calll a clue!
They sure are linked, do you have haynes manual, they tend to have the best wiring diagrams?
If I remember rightly they share an earth.

They also share a regulated 10V feed via the voltage stabiliser on the back of the instrument cluster. This may be of use:

hmmmm! changed the voltage stabaliser and it worked!
but lasted about 30 seconds…..i take it this means the earth tallpete is talking about is the route of the problem?? where is this?
need a new voltage stabaliser now
good thing is that i connected the speedo cable to the clocks and it works! - other end was disconnected too… also the mpg air hose was diconected too so thats also now working!
should be sorted this weekened! this car is all comming together now! only other prob is the heaters! see my heater post!

Think its pin2 on the back of the instruments - but not sure.
Would be worth cleaning up the rosette anyway and see if that sorts it.
Sometimes it's worth running a separate earth to the instrument cluster particlarly if the dash is out (Come on Wellsy give is a definitive how the MFA works - you know you want to )
