Fuel and temp gauge wiring
In my ongoing mission to get the clocks working properly i moved my attention to the fuel and temp gauges. Neither work so i searched on here and found that i may need the voltage stabiliser on the circuit on the back of the clocks. Before trying to find one i thought i'd check the fuel sender.
This leads me to the wiring for it:
Refering to the Haynes manual i saw that the fuel sender should have a lilac/black wire, so i connected these wires and also the brown for earth (i guess) don't worry i'll insulate the wires and connect them properly and now the fuel gauge works
BUT
what is the other yellow/red for, is it for the temp gauge?
In the engine bay i have this wire:
The previous owner wired up a VDO to get a Temp reading (fully working) so i took the VDO wire off and put the pictured wire on as this was insulated and hanging loose.
Sorry for the story!! I've looked at the Haynes but can't quite work out what i need to do with the red/yellow wire near the fuel sender to get my temp gauge to work.

the one in the rear you are on about i beleive is …
\- red/yel- main & transfer fuel pumps
have you checked the temp gauge is functioning correctly on the clocks… ?

The temp gauge wasn't working properly. I've just tried to check the "yel/red- coolant temp sender" connection 29 through to the coolant temp sensor but couldn't follow it all the way. I've changed the connector but no difference and if i place a multimeter on it there's nothing.
So i chopped the wire near the fuse box and attached the extra wire the previous owner had run to the VDO gauge and just went for a run to warm the car up. The temp gauge worked ish! The red light in the middle of it kept flickering when going over bumps so i must have a dodgy connection somewhere. I've checked all connections but nothing. However when i looked at my newly fixed fuel gauge it was reading past maximum. I know the fuel and temp gauge run through the voltage stabiliser so could it be this? When the ignition is on but car not running the fuel gauge shows just under full (which is correct)
On a side note, i've followed the extra red/yel wire from the fuel sender and this goes into the back of the fusebox in the same place the main red/yel wire goes in, but it goes through a junction that then splits off and 2 x red/white wires go into the engine bay.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm slowly getting to grips with this spaghetti mess!
