front window washer switch
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT This switch Does it go above the hazard warning switch on the dashboard? On mine there is a toggle switch that obviously wasn't there at the beginning. This button is to operate the front windscreen washer jets? Cheers folks

washer jets are operated by pulling wiper stalk towards you. if you have a button on the dash someone in the past has had a wiring fail

It's a 1983 mk1 1.6 gti. Lets say at some point in it's life it had a little makeover, that gok wan would have been proud of. Some one else said they thought it had an earlier dashboard than the year of the car. So perhaps it's been changed at somepoint. I would show but I can't figure how to put pictures up. the rear wiper washer jet works by using the window wiper stalk but not the front jets it's a toggle switch above the hazard switch. Over the weekend i'll take some pics and photobucket them. If i do this no comments about my Bedford van that'll be up there I love it) cheers folks

as std 83 would have the series 2 dash, which looks like this:
if yours has liek a goldy colour panel with 2 seperate round holes for the main dials its prob a series 1 dash. i was under the assumption they used stalk mounted washers like the later ones, but I could be wrong

Thats the same dashboard. From the hazard switch up mine is washer jet then fog light then rear window demister. What are yours? Would be handy to find a mark1 owners handbook, but they don't even seem to come up on ebay. The rear wash jet works from the stalk but the front doesn',t always thought it was strange. When i saw that button i thought aah! but it's looking that it was misplaced optimism. At the end of the day everything works. I just thought it would be cooler to have the actual button in the gap.

it goes:
blank
rear screen heater
fog light(s)
hazard switch
as for the issue you have, it might just be a worn stalk. take off the column surround trim (2 screws underneath) and look at the wiper stalk base as you pull it back to do screen washers. you'll note a small metal contact in there, buff this up and bend it so it makes good contact. I had exactly the same issue on my cabby after I finished building it
