if yours has liek a goldy colour panel with 2 seperate round holes for the main dials its prob a series 1 dash. i was under the assumption they used stalk mounted washers like the later ones, but I could be wrong

as for the issue you have, it might just be a worn stalk. take off the column surround trim (2 screws underneath) and look at the wiper stalk base as you pull it back to do screen washers. you'll note a small metal contact in there, buff this up and bend it so it makes good contact. I had exactly the same issue on my cabby after I finished building it
