Flat battery!!!!!
Hi all, really need help here im pulling my hair out!!! I got a Mk1 Cabbi Gti (E Reg). Over the last 3 months ive had problems with a flat battery. 6 weeks ago id had enough, and put a new battery, high volt alternator and belt on the car. It was ok for about 3 weeks now the problem has come back again. Ive had the AA out who done checks on the car to make sure nothing was draining the battery when the car was off, and they said it was fine????? I love this car and just as we are into some nice sunshine its starting to play up again. I really don?t know what else to do, but I need a car that starts in the morning? any ideas anybody ???????
Cheers

Did the AA also check that the new battery and new alternator were working properly?? It has been known for new parts to be faulty, or for them to become faulty within a few weeks, so just because they are new, don't assume they are working properly! I would start by ensuring that both the new bits are infact 100% ok first, then move on to other things. Halfords or kwik-fit will do a free electronic battery test, and you can test the output of the alternator yourself using a multimeter.

certainly sounds like something is draining the battery dispite what they may have said, but it is not unheard of for batteries to loose their change with nothing connected, so I would charge the battery up and make sure it starts the car, then park it up with the battery disconnected and see if it still looses its charge. If it does then it means you have a duff battery, if it doesn't, then it means that there MUST be something draining more power than it should on the car when it's off. I had a car radio wired in wrongly on mine (was my fault) and that used to drain the battery on mine in about 48hrs, so check things like this.
Also with a good set of jump leads you should be able to jump start the car even with a completely flat battery. Check your connections on the jump leads when you try and make sure they are good, and that the jump leads are man enough for the job (if they are getting hot when you try and start the golf, then they are probably too thin)

check the voltage from your alt too,
should be 13.5-14v with the engine on, and about 12v off,

…. i cant even start it from another car. ….
…this suggests to me that you have a bad connection somewhere…..battery earth lead where it's bolted to the body/chassis…..connections at the starter solenoid….?????
Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…
