Fan blowers, strange problem????

Ive got a strange problem! The blowers in my 89 cab gti work when they want, sometimes they work and sometimes not.
Mainly go off when i corner right but dont come back on till i switch off and leave over night?!?!
Most of the time they only work for a couple of mins then die not to start agin till the next morning.

Anyone got any ideas?

I've had some similar problems on my 89 cab, it ended up being a dodgy rotary switch. Over time the contacts get worn and the spring loses its tension.

I ended up taking my switch to bits and bodging it a bit to improve the electrical contact.

This is easily tested by pushing the switch in when you have any one of the three speeds selected, it should work until you take pressure off the switch.

If its not your switch you might have loose a connection somewhere, the fusebox's are pretty bad on the mk1, I've ended up wiring my blower switch directly to the battery.

If your worried that your fan might be on its way out then just get a length of wire and connect the positive connection of the fan to the battery directly, if it runs up and stays running then your fans fine.

You can get the switches new from GSF £6.00 when I bought one last.
Or pm funkstar on here, he will probably have one knocking about too.

Do you know, it didn't even cross my mind to buy a new one! I might get one actually, cos my fan still doesn't work on position 2 without pressing it in!

I've had exactly the same problem until this morning.

I squirted wd40 into the fan motor and after about half an hour of stop starting it's now running perfectly :D

I was told by a friend of mine who repaired starter motors and alternators that you should be carefull spraying electric motors with lubricant as it can knacker the bushes.

It's the bushes that are dry and sticking, sometimes giving a squeling noise too.
