i've got the exact same problem at the moment,

mine is a 83' 1.1 Golf C, at first i thought it was the alternator but changed that and still have same problem? however i noticed there was 1 or 2 terminals on the alternator that werent doing anything? looked into it a bit further and apparently 1 is a 'turn on' switch which should go to the back of the clocks, so i've put a wire to where it should go which now brings the battery light on when ignition is live and turns off when its running (as it should) but it causes the car to misfire really badly so i've disconnected that aswell.

if anyone has any other advice on this subject it would be great help to both myself and Keany

many thanks

Sounds like you car stereo could be draining it for whatever reason.

From the bump in the road I'd suggest there's a faulty wire to it, and possibly its wired in a permanant on mode, which means it'll draw a fair bit off the battery even when its supposedly off.

Find out why its dying when bumped 1st, (could also be a faulty earth strap) and then tackle the battery draining problem. The only real way to do this is by using a ammeter and removing each item until the current drops.

It could also be however a faulty alternator itself, as the voltage regulator may have gone. These can (and should) be replaced on some models.

Hope that gets you started.

yeah gunna get hold of an ammeter i think n start removing fuses on relays see when current drops.

plus i dont think its the stereo coz the battery was draining for about a month before the stereo starting tripping out
