6.5" (16cm) components are good. You'll probably need a door build to mount them properly. Basically the Mk1 is rubbish for a decent audio installation and doesn't lend itself easily to upgrades, so you need to do a bit of graft on it etc

What head unit are you using? For good sounds, you'll need a good head unit (ignore their 'peak' power outputs, look for the RMS power as a more realistic comparison) and if its quite low, then a separate amp is always a good idea to boost the sound level and also allows more cones to be fitted. The more cones, the easier it is to achieve high volume with good headroom too.

arrr nice… well the head unit is a JVC 4x45watt.. its not bad but i dont like the head unit personally.. i will be changing it soon.. i've put jbl 6x4s in the front and there not bad ive just got to put a bit more work in to it to get them seated a little better.. just looking for a decent sound in the back which give out more bass and allow the sound to travel ive noticed there is a bit of space in the back speaker wells to try and get somethink bigger in there i just need to no what i can fit in there.. as the back panel cards dont really allow you to cut the speakers in to there..

I think you can fit 13cm speakers if you're prepared to cut/trim metal. But…..you really need bass at the front of the car, those little 6x4"s can't be doing that good a job, or will soon blow their cones LOL

I am in the same prediciment as you. I want to upgrade my new cab have no fronts and the 4" rears. i want the stock look so found some beautiful alpine 4"?25 a pair and some even more beautiful infinity 42.9 which are about ?80 a pair  have also found budget stuff vibe and pyle for about ?15 a pair kenwood KFC-1061S  ?18 all of the are 4", try jbl gto6427 6x4's  ?18 a pair or pyle blue label 4 x 6 for ?13 they are 3 way so speakers work less hard than 2way or co axial. if you want stock looks go for as many way as possible and you only get what you pay for. I had 6x9's in the rear of my old cab and they sounded good along with jbl gto 6.5" components in the front but did cut the door cards and remove speaker pods and watch where you fit them or you may fowl the window winder did not need door pods. I agree the std 6x4 and 4" setup is not good but using good quality speakers will sound better.
The last time i invested in car audio was some time ago about 8 years and obviously alpine and infinity stuff ruled. JBL was my choice there are more players out ther now. best to go to a car audio place and listen to speakers as the same size from different maunfacturers sound so different. if you want links to the speakers i have mentioned just ask but they are all on ebay. Also remember if you drop the roof most the sound is lost and you end up covering the ones in the parcel shelf

multiway speaker. or cut a big hole in the middle of the cone. removing the part of the speaker that moves the quickest is not the way to acheive good sound quality. they are a compromise to acheive the effect of multiple components in one package and the word is definatly compromise. there is a reason they are not used in high end hifi equipment. dont take this as me arguing with you mate just stating a fact.

the 6x4's in the front will be fine they will handle the mid range nicely. a decent set of 4 inch speakers buried somewhere will handle high range and can be driven from the same front channel with a suitable cross over this is the effect that multiway speakers are trying to acheive.

this is where it gets hazy
you will struggle to bring bass to the front of the car. the usual practice is add a sub and amp in the boot (bass requires lots of power) 8-12" is the normal choice. for a good sound you dont really need more than a 250watt amp in a cabby. with this set up you should get an ok sound.

look to match the impedence of the speakers to the headunit or amp.

you will always have to comprimise with any car install. there is to much in the way and way to many funny angles in a car to achieve perfect sound reproduction. i cabby this is made worse by the sound deadening effect of the flappy roof or lack of it as the case may be.

nice one nova and dash i will keep it all in mind.. like i sed ive got the jbl gtos in the front... im not bothered about bass in the front i just want a gernal good sound as i no most of the sound will be lost in the soft roof or with roof down..... i have thought about a sub in the boot but i need the space to fit a push chair.. so its hard.. im just gunna have to keep trying speakers out till im happy lol..

what about an active sub driven of the hea unit with its own power and amp bulilt in then remove it when the pushchair goes in and put the sub bak in when you dont have the chair i am sure things like active sub boxes are easy to fit and remove. personally never used them as i use dthe seperate amp and sub set up. ao have a sub box in the boot fit the amp under the front seats and all you have to do then is remove the sub box if required

Nova i agree that compnents are better tha 3 way what ever way they are but for stock looks you do as you say comprimise. My point was go listen to stuff as they vary soooo much from one speaker to another.
Also it is a cab so to get teh best out of the audio dyunamat the doors floor  etc but once the roof is down the tunes just flyt out. Saying that i did mess about with my saab 900 audio using stock stereo and mad an adaptor for the amp to run off it and with my gto 6.5 components it sounded really sweet
I have not bothered with car audio for years though as i have always had the top set up i can in my cars over the past 5 years already fitted. current one has digital amps etc only thing is it is difficult to upgrade this stuff anyway we are on golfs and if i wanted to cut hoes in door card i thi i would stealth ft 6.5" in the door and tweeter high up in the card. in the rear do the same with more components.

6x4 coaxiel bluedots. (blaupunkt)
bluedot headunit 60w per channel
banded crossover in either door card
2 x 10" subs in an open face vented box in the boot. unamplified

i gave up on stereos along time ago mate. i hardly use whats in there anyway.
way back in the day the list was alot longer
6x4 " coaxiels in the doors
2x 4" jbl in the centre facing out
2x 6" infinity's in the rear doors
2x 8" not sure anymores in the vented parcelshelf
2x 10" subs in a channeled box in the boot.

anything in front of the front seats was driven from a 100w amp with active crossover meaning the 6x4s handled mid range and the 4" handle high range
anything back from the front seats was driven from a 1000w amp in the boot. with a second active crossover the 6" infinity's had enough range to allow them to be used for mid-high range.
all run of a sony 60w headuint.

i got bored of it, it weighed the car down and rarely got used so i ripped it out in favour of a nice light install.
i never cut the anything in the car but i did make a set of door cards and a parcel shelf of my own. and the box in the boot was custom made.

that setup made the car vibrate. i had to glue the reflectors in the rear lights. it was very loud.

the setup i have now is more than loud enough for my old (28) ears. (partially deaf in one which makes for interesting setup)

Just been listening to 4" for the rear of my cab and settled on alpines i think not sure if to pay ?20 or ?45 for a pair i know you only get what you pay for but in a cab you lose soo much sound any way. And for the front i am going to put matching alipines in to. they were so much clearer than anything else i listed to although no bass but my thinking is you dont want bass in them, anyway or they will distort when turned up.

An excellent alternative for the price conscious is the 6x9 Subwoofer from Genesis.  Putting regular 6x9s in the rear (or any full range speaker) will generally drag the soundstage backwards in the car. Great for rear seat  passengers but not so good for the audiophile car driver.

The Genesis profiles do a good job of adding bass (which is non directional by nature) allowing the components fitted in the front to cover mid and high frequencies and don't need huge builds to work. They are better driven from an amp but will work from a good headunit.

I bought some a while back from here but I'm sure you can get some anywhere.

im in the exact situation, i have some ok-ish JVC 6x4's 130w in the front but having hard time finding some nice 4" for the rear ideally id like them to have at least 55w rms to match the head unit any got any links to some good car audio websites that may have what i need?

edit found some nice JBL's P-462 4" true 4omh, 50w rms, 150w peak with crossovers for ?69.99 that should run ok
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/9128.html

also found a nice 10" fusion subbox with built in amp and all wires 300w max should be enough for the cabby for ?74.99
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/10200.html

just trying to find some nice 6x4's, 50w rms, 4ohms to match any ideas????
