What head unit are you using? For good sounds, you'll need a good head unit (ignore their 'peak' power outputs, look for the RMS power as a more realistic comparison) and if its quite low, then a separate amp is always a good idea to boost the sound level and also allows more cones to be fitted. The more cones, the easier it is to achieve high volume with good headroom too.

The last time i invested in car audio was some time ago about 8 years and obviously alpine and infinity stuff ruled. JBL was my choice there are more players out ther now. best to go to a car audio place and listen to speakers as the same size from different maunfacturers sound so different. if you want links to the speakers i have mentioned just ask but they are all on ebay. Also remember if you drop the roof most the sound is lost and you end up covering the ones in the parcel shelf

the 6x4's in the front will be fine they will handle the mid range nicely. a decent set of 4 inch speakers buried somewhere will handle high range and can be driven from the same front channel with a suitable cross over this is the effect that multiway speakers are trying to acheive.
this is where it gets hazy
you will struggle to bring bass to the front of the car. the usual practice is add a sub and amp in the boot (bass requires lots of power) 8-12" is the normal choice. for a good sound you dont really need more than a 250watt amp in a cabby. with this set up you should get an ok sound.
look to match the impedence of the speakers to the headunit or amp.
you will always have to comprimise with any car install. there is to much in the way and way to many funny angles in a car to achieve perfect sound reproduction. i cabby this is made worse by the sound deadening effect of the flappy roof or lack of it as the case may be.

Also it is a cab so to get teh best out of the audio dyunamat the doors floor etc but once the roof is down the tunes just flyt out. Saying that i did mess about with my saab 900 audio using stock stereo and mad an adaptor for the amp to run off it and with my gto 6.5 components it sounded really sweet
I have not bothered with car audio for years though as i have always had the top set up i can in my cars over the past 5 years already fitted. current one has digital amps etc only thing is it is difficult to upgrade this stuff anyway we are on golfs and if i wanted to cut hoes in door card i thi i would stealth ft 6.5" in the door and tweeter high up in the card. in the rear do the same with more components.

bluedot headunit 60w per channel
banded crossover in either door card
2 x 10" subs in an open face vented box in the boot. unamplified
i gave up on stereos along time ago mate. i hardly use whats in there anyway.
way back in the day the list was alot longer
6x4 " coaxiels in the doors
2x 4" jbl in the centre facing out
2x 6" infinity's in the rear doors
2x 8" not sure anymores in the vented parcelshelf
2x 10" subs in a channeled box in the boot.
anything in front of the front seats was driven from a 100w amp with active crossover meaning the 6x4s handled mid range and the 4" handle high range
anything back from the front seats was driven from a 1000w amp in the boot. with a second active crossover the 6" infinity's had enough range to allow them to be used for mid-high range.
all run of a sony 60w headuint.
i got bored of it, it weighed the car down and rarely got used so i ripped it out in favour of a nice light install.
i never cut the anything in the car but i did make a set of door cards and a parcel shelf of my own. and the box in the boot was custom made.
that setup made the car vibrate. i had to glue the reflectors in the rear lights. it was very loud.
the setup i have now is more than loud enough for my old (28) ears. (partially deaf in one which makes for interesting setup)

The Genesis profiles do a good job of adding bass (which is non directional by nature) allowing the components fitted in the front to cover mid and high frequencies and don't need huge builds to work. They are better driven from an amp but will work from a good headunit.
I bought some a while back from here but I'm sure you can get some anywhere.
