Dodgy clocks/buy new ones?

I have a 1990 cabby gti, before i get the clocks out just wondering what i should be looking at.

1-My speedo sticks

2-The digital clock is on but the mfa's not working

3-My rev counter's not working

Want to try to sort it today so any advice would be appreciated

Speedo problems could be the cable, or sometime it just neds seating properly, its a mechanical thing at any rate.

The MFA I beleive has an earth strap inside the engine on top of the carb, to the top of the cam cover (from memory), check that hasnt come away (I think that just causes mis-readings though)

or it could just be goosed, they do go and I don't have one so I couldn't tell you if they're repairable but I doubt it.

Had the clocks out and everything seems to be connected, was wondering if i would be wasting my time  getting some new clocks

Does the cable itself spin when you disconnect it from the back of the speedo?

I'll check it, i was also thinking of a new cable, is it hard to get to the engine end of it? Still not figured the rev counter out tho

Sorry…. Rev counter is electrical and connects to the negative end of the coil, might just be the socket needs a clean, could be the wiring itself and I can't remember what colour code it is, I'll check when I get home if I remember.

Looks like its a red/black wire to the coil, not too sure about the cab circuits as I dont look at them that often.

Anyway hope that helps, as to the speedo cable removal, not sure never done one, sorry. You should be able to see it spinning with the engine running though I would've thought.

its not too difficult to get at the engine end if your a little bit bendy - its 10mm bolt that holds it down.  Theres a guide for changing gear oil in the running gear section that shows how to get at it.

Although an easier way to check if its working at the engine end is to drive it a little without the clocks there, you should see the little square inner rotate as you move.  obviously dont go on the public road without a speedo though - just nip up and down the drive etc.  You wont need to go far/fast to see it rotate.

or you can jack the front end up (both wheels off the ground with axle stands) and with the engine running just stick it in any gear.  The cable however will not rotate with the wheels on the ground and gearbox in neutral.

Hope that helps
