Digital clock etc....

I have a 89 gti cabrio,

The digital clock inbetween the speedo and rev counter is very tempramental it comes on when it wants and goes off when it wants, all the knobs on the stick work but the screen never stays on. What could this be I'd love for it to work

Hi Adam,

  I presume you are talking about the MFA display, sounds like you have a break or bad earth connection possibly on the plastic printed circuit board on the back of clocks, these are prone to problems with age.

Suggest you get multimeter and check continuity to MFA display, this means taking clocks out. I may have a spare set of clocks in the garage, I'll check and let you know, I'm also in Stockport so if you need a hand let me know.

this one is fed off the red wire to the cluster, which is a permanent live feed. the earth is the same as for most of the other parts of the dash so if they all work then its not that. does the time reset when the display goes off? if not its probably a fault in the cluster

ok cool, id say you are loosing the power or the earth. check the brown/white wire to the head, and also look at the brown wire to the cluster see if its got a good earth. while you're there check the plug for bent pins and the pcb on the dash connector for wear
