Dash Workings

Post

Hi, been scratching my head a bit with the workings of my dash.

Everything was working but then I trod on a wire an must have pulled, dislodged something. Had a good look and can't see anything obvious.
Basically, the rev counter works but nothing else on the dash, but when you turn the lights on the water temp and fuel gauge work, dash lights don't. I think the rev counter stops working. Car lights work fine by the way, dim, main etc..
When you switch the lights off, water and fuel needles move again.
The red led on the water doesn't flash, it used to flash for a few seconds when you switch the car on.

So I know all the individual components work but not all at the same time. Makes me think its an earth. On rev counter side of the dash there is the main bar connector which has an earth but nothing changes when I earth this to a known good earth.

I did see a 2 pin plug not connected to anything around the steering column area, small needle pins like the ones on the main fuse block, as opposed to a spade type.

When I screwed the speedo cable in one time the dash lights came on but everything else was playing up as above still.

I'm no electrician so take a long time going through every possibility, if anyone can shine any light might save me a long of time.

Two things.
First check the brown white wire is connected to the rocker cover corner stud. From there an earth braid strap goes to the coil mounting bracket bolt.
This is the earth for the clocks.

Second take clocks out and clean up the connector strip on the blue foil on the back of the clocks.
Place a strip of tape over the black plastic nib the foil fits over. This should help with better contact when all is plugged in.
This is for a DX GTI as on mine.

Thanks guys, it amazes me how much some of you know about mk1 golfs from memory.
Ran a wire from the earth on the back of the dash to the rocker cover and everything worked as it should so at least now I know where to look, I imagine theres going to be a loose earth around the fusebox or the earth wire itself is knackered.
I will take a photo of the wire I trod on as it has a plug connector of it but I cant remember where it came from, there is a good chance someone here will recognise it.
I don't have a mfa dash so thats probably why that plug is disconnected, thanks for letting me know what it is.

Any ideas what this controls?

If I am seeing what I think, the answer is -  nothing!
I'm not convinced that it is OEM wiring, and it is not complete anyway, so anyones guess as to what it used to work.

I thought that might be the case. I'm not missing anything vital control wise. Thanks for having a look.

you can look it up on the the wiring guide in the electrical section , red is clock/fag lighter , black is ign live , brown earth , the green black in the engine bay is on the negative side of the coil but i cant remember offhand what it is on the dash , plain green is on the wipers i think
