dash issues

hi, in my 83 gti ive got some issues with the dash and lights, if i start the car up the rev counter,temp, oil light, fuel guage clock etc work fine but when i turn the lights on everything goes off and the dash lights dont work (got new bulbs in) also today i found when i reved the car to around 3 or 4k then then the oil light comes on, the rev counter cuts out and theres a buzzing sound coming from the headlight swith! this stops and goes back to normal if i turn the lights on and off, also theres no signs of life in the mfa or mpg, any one have a clue what could be wrong? ive had a look about to see if i could see anything unplugged and i even fitted an earth from the rocker cover to the body, made no difference

Strange problem but why not just try a new headlight switch as this seems to be the culprit ?

I've got exactly the same problem on my 1983 GTI and was wondering if you managed to fix yours?

it will be the earth for the clocks, i had the same trouble with mine, added an earth from the plug on the clocks straight to the body behind the clocks and job done!

ive put an earth from the rocker cover to the body and made no difference, bought a new headlight and made no difference, i bought some new clocks and the buzzings stopped but the oil light still comes on at about 3k and when i turn the headlights on then everything on the clocks still go off and the dash lights still dont work,

dont know what else to try realy, ill give that other earth from the clock to body ago to see if that helps

Good tip from jamiegolf brown wire on plugs could be double tapped to provide another earth [self tapper in the metal behind the dash would be good ]

Oil light have you tried replacing the high pressure oil switch ? Its on the top of the oil filter .
