damn car

right im no electric expert.

but why on earth do my hazard lights work, and when i put the indicators on, does the green light glow green (not flashing) and the indicators dont work??

the bulbs flash on hazards but not indicating???

and still my light switch and full beam adjust the rev counter i.e. lights on rev counter and clock off.

suppose atleast the engine temp is working i think again.

What the heck is going on, all I did was change the inner dash!!!

and im not keen on driving without indicators.

help appreciated, please speak in basic terms.

keep on topic and dont take the mickey

This problem has always been related to a faulty Hazard switch . So my advice is to ……………Try a new relay and a new hazard switch . The hazard switch is ?10.72 from VW

The relay is in the fuse box - passenger side behind the dash

Check all your fuses and for any water in the fuse box.

Next to the fuse box a set of earth connections - clean them up and redo the screw holding them to make sure you have a good earth.

found the relays, dunno how to tell if it broken or not…

Tried playing with the hazard switch no joy.

Right here goes, now i've calmed down a bit, had a bad day this is exaclty what is happening.

1. When the lights are on ( not turning key or putting ignition on ) the light dimmer switch works, and illimuniates the dash to the desired level however….

Switch the keys onto ignition or start her up and it goes all black

2. The little green light where the indicator led thing is is on a constant low green colour

3. put the lights on full beam and the clock goes out, and the rev counter goes off, and this happens when you play with the light adjuster too!

4. There appears to be no water in the fuse box all fuses are ok

I dont know how to fix a relay, dont know if its broken or not.

Why on earth my car has suddenly decided to go stupid i do not know.

Im not an expert never confess to be, but its REALLY REALLY ANNOYING ME NOW.

sounds like you have got a bad earth connection on the back of the clocks, very common problem, u needto remove your speedo clocks, find the brown wire on the plug and add a wire to it and earth it on the bulkhead behind the clock, i bet that will sort your problem out. also check you have got all your wires on the back of the hazard switch, i had a similar problem and i had left 1 spade terminaloff the back of the switch.

Nath,
like Jamie said above it's the clock earth that causes the rev counter to die when you turn your lights on.  An easy check is open your bonnet and look at the rear corner or the rocker cover.  There should be a brown wire connecting to the corner nut on the rocker cover.  This is the clock earth.  If this isn't connected do it and it should solve many of your problems.

Similar problem

Hi, I've a similar problem with my mk1 GTi. The fuse box got wet and I had various problems which I subsequently solved with the exception of 1. Everything has been fully dried out. The green LED on the dash remains illuminated as soon as the indicator left or right switch or hazard switch is turned on. It remains illuminated even with the relay removed from the fusebox.  Neither the indicators nor the hazard lights work. Hopefully someone can help, I'm confused………….  :banghead:
