Couple of problems: Speedo and wipers

Hi all,
Ive just got myself a mk1 gti which has a 1.8 kr from a mk2 golf.
The car is still running mk1 clocks, and it all seems to work except the speedo, and therefore the milage has also become stuck.

Also the window wipers don't seem to work, front or back. Checked the fuse and thats all good.
So basically looking for a bit of advice as to where to start!
Any help would be appreciated :)

Sounds daft, but have you given the dash instrument screen a good tap with your knuckle while moving? The speedo might just burst into life and save you trying harder solutions first! Worked for me once, and it hasn't stopped again since.
As for the wipers, do the washers work then? I've read somewhere, you can remove the relay (no 19) and then put the wipers on the fastest setting to see if they work then. If so, the relay is faulty (water damage etc). The mechanisms could be seized like mad too. Remove the mechanism and clean and grease the spindles to encourage it back into movement. If you're looking at new motors, these are easy to come by 2nd hand. You could even take the opportunity to upgrade to a Mk2 motor or later for less lazy wipers.

Hi,
Yeah ive given the dash a tap whilst driving, possibly not a hard enough tap though lol :) I will give it another go later on.
I think im going to remove the wiper mechanism at the weekend and have a good old look around. Need to find a leak also as my footwells had a nice swimming pool after washing the car yesterday lol… Oh the joys of driving a mk1 :D
Thanks
Alan

If the fusebox is getting wet, that's probably causing problems like that relay?   If the 2 drain holes each side of the bulkhead are clogged up, the water may be running in under the plastic scuttle panel area and making its way through.

I did think about that, but the drainage holes in that position seem to be doing there job quite well. Will have to investigate further into that lol  :banghead:

Tried giving the dash a good bang earlier…. still no speedo so will have to get the clocks out and have a check behind there at the weekend
