Component ID

Hi,

Couple of things.

Can anyone tell me what this component is called, and what colour wires plug into it??

Also is should there be a pipe coming off the white connector?? If so where does it go to??

&

My throttle body has a small connector on it. It has 2 wires coming from it.
A brown & a yellow.

Can anyone tell me what colour wires should plug into the throttle body??

Cheers

Brown is always an earth and (I imagine) its the earth that connects to the top of the rocker cover (cylinder head cover) to earth it.

Yellow maybe the (what I call) the throttle body heater and is part of a warm up system to prevent carb icing and that goes to a sensor on the water manifold.

But its hard to say without kbnowing the carb and model of the car

I've not seen a connection like that in that position before, guess someone has added some aftermarket accesories in the past, I'd remove it.
I've looked at your previous posts and assume you have a GTi   , if you've got wires on the throttle body then someone has fitted a later body from a mk2 Golf, so dont worry about finding where the wires go as they dont connect to anything on a mk1, it'll run fine on that throttle body as it is, or keep your eyes peeled for someone selling a standard mk1 throttle body if your plans involve going back to standard.
I see from your previous posts that your from the West Mids, if your in need of looking under the bonnet of a GTi, then pop along to our meets…..next one 18th February at Toys R Us in Oldbury………..and we'll help you as much as we can

I'm guessing its a later cabby because they do have a device bolted to the drivers side wing. Its an idle bypass valve and its there to raise idle speed during warm up. The 2 pipes connect to one side and another of the throttle body, so it can bypass it and allow more air to flow. It typically raises rpm by 200 or so. Part of this is that there is an idle switch on the throttle body.

Unfortunately, I don't know the exact connection colours though……

Paul, it's an '83 cabby according to previous threads Enoch has posted, so think someone has been raiding later models for parts

Yep, if its an 1983 car then the engine has probably been replaced at some point, and they (half) transferred the newer engine's vacuum pipework over. 2 choices really; plumb it in as the later model should be; or ditch the whole circuit. If you simply don't have the wires, then I'd suggest the latter, but make sure any extra holes and pipes in the inlet tract area are also sealed up, otherwise you'll get a massive unmetered air leak.

Thanks fellas, very helpful.

And apologies for the lack of info. It is indeed an 83 Cabby GTi

Funny enough, there's an underbonnet pic on here (Red Gti) that shows that component, but its not clear enough to see how its piped, wired etc.

I've managed to make contact with a helpful chap who (Mark) who works in Halfords in Chester.
I went down on Thursday and took a load of hi res photos under the bonnet of his Mk1.
But typical of my luck, his car didn't have the little component on the drivers side wing :?

I may indeed pop along to the meeting on the 18th, but I'm hoping to have it running well before then

Ignore what I said I can't get pictures at work and my answer was based on not seeing it :)
