complete system failure, intermittent

whilst driving my golf for the first time today, doing sixty up a steep hill, everything died, all of it ,engine, electrics, the lot.
i managed to get her safe, went under the bonnet and wiggled some wires, starting at the battery, and then just general wiggling,
and she came back to life, of i went and 3 mins later it happened again, more wiggling and i finally got her home.

ive checked thro the faq thread and from that it seems like ive got a bad earth, ive found the earth point list in the archive and plan to go throught the system 2moro,

logic suggests to me that as all of it died its probably the earth from the battery,

my question is , am i right or maybe close or am i mad and need to take her to an auto electrician
cheers for any advice
