COIL PROBLEM!!

Hi,

Im getting close to finishing my project. To cut a long story short we've got a mk1 golf that was originally a 1.1. We had a donor car which was a 1.8 automatic scirocco. we've changed it to manual and put the engine in the car. we've got the fuel up to the carb but we havent got a spark.

Does anyone have a diagram of the wires that go to the coil and where they go to as i cant seem to find any pictures or anythin anywhere.
we've took the amp off the scirocco and fitted that but we still have some wires coming from the original golf loom.

We've been scratching our heads and swapping wires round until we spotted something on another site about the wiring so we changed it to how that was and still had no spark. My brother was turning the ignition while i was checking for a spark but couldnt see anything. Then i took the HT lead from the dizzy and put that to engine to see if we had anything then but nothing…. all of a sudden i got a belt!!!!!!!
Turns out when u turn the ignition from the 2nd position to the 1st position it sparks!!!!!! lol.
Does this mean something has been wired up wrong on the ignition?7

Can anyone help me please?
Sorry for the long winded explanation.

Thank you
James

originally this car would have had points ignition, and chances are the rocco was electronic. did you also change the coil, cap, arm and leads for the correct later electronic ignition type? also did you fit the tci unit in the scuttle, along with the loom from it to the dizzy and coil? last of all, was the entire engine loom changed or did you keep the old 1.1 stuff? reason i ask is the points ign coil has a resistor wire from the fusebox which reduces the voltage down from 12v. the electronic ign coil needs a proper 12v feed from the fusebox so you either have to run another feed or change the engine loom.

if all of the above checks out, run a 12v wire from the battery to the coil +ve side, if it fires up then you know you have an ign feed problem, the way yo describe it giving you a jolt when going back to position 1 suggests maybe  the ign switch wants changing :)
