Centre Console Dials

Can anyone tell me what was originally fitted into the centre console when it comes to dials??

I'm guessing they were only dealer/option fit??

Has anyone got some pics they can send me of the original ones so I know what to look out for as I've only got the blanking plate in my console and wouldn't mind getting my hands on some.

Thanks.

Tom, I'm sure Rajan will correct me if wrong but as far as I can recall, all series 1 MK1's had a single clock in the centre consul, all series 2 MK1's had nothing as standard, only optional/dealer fit extras.

Hope someone should have a pic here, you'll often see on ebay the audi ones being quoted as original MK1 but they are different.

If buying 2nd hand ones make sure you get the sender for the oil pressure gauge too as I think they are very expensive to buy new?!

Hairyarse - Think series 1 GTIs had oil temp and clock centre gauges as standard (only two holes). Series 2 1600 GTIs had oil temp as standard in centre console, series 2 1800 GTI didn't as oil temp is on MFA.

From a bit of digging, can anyone confirm if these dials are right (or have them in their mk1 series 2):

x1 Battery voltage
x1 Oil Temp
x1 Oil Pressure

Good thinking about the oil pressure sender switch!!!

Any pics or further ideas????

Thanks

There is no right or wrong, but personally I'd switch the voltmeter for an ammeter as more useful to check the charging circuit.

Voltmeter is definately better to have than a amp meter, and is easier to fit taking a jumper wire from the relay plate.
Oil pressure gauge sender. The sender is available new, but make sure you get the correct sender unit for the gauge (ie 10 bar unit, not the audi 5 bar unit). The sender I bought last year was around ?36.00, but was the twin pole type so you could still run the oil pressure light and gauge. You can get a single pole version, but this means the oil light/buzzer becomes redundant.

Is there a seperate pressure sensitive switch which activates the dashboard oil light located on the cylinder head?  Or is the dashlight/buzzer activated by the sender unit?  I have been informed that the dash light is connected to a sensor on the cylinder head and the oil pressure gauge uses both poles on oil sender one for light other for pressure?.

The dipole sender replaces the single pole sender on the side of the head. From memory of the VDO sender, you connect the original warning light wire to pole marked "WK" and the gauge to the one marked "G", i.e. they are separate.

You can get the bipole sender from bigboystoys. You also need a t bar to keep your mfa working properly. They do them too.I have some gauges I'm about to fit and have found the following useful (sorry I don't know how to do direct links   )
the 8v undercurrent
Search under google and go to How-to's.It's for a mark 2 but I think all the principle's the same.

I've managed to get my paws on a centre console with VDO gauges. :P
I don't have the loom to connect the gauges though

Any ideas where ?I can get one from? :dontknow:

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

Its probably easier and quicker to make your own. Something I've always done myself in the past as I dont; think anyone does an off the shelf loom kit (although I might have an idea now for another new product   )

I made my own. Daisy chain all three to earth (use the rosette near the fuse box, and if a real anorak use brown wire) Tap in to the grey/blue internal lighting wire near the cig lighter for the gauge lighting. Run a switched 12v from the fuse box for the voltmeter (cant remember which connection will try and look it up when I get home) and then finally two wires through the bulkhead to the oil temp and pressure senders. Errr…. you do have the senders don't you?
