Bulbs and brake light switch?

Ive re wired my mk1 loom as the rear lights wern't working and the previous owner had messed about with the loom. What position does the double filament bulb go on the rear clusters because when i apply the brakes they still dont work, the drivers lights work fine. Im thinking the brake light switch may be faulty but want to check first, is it on the pedal box?? ohh and also the brake system has no fluid in it atm because i am re-furbing the calipers and fitting new disks etc don't know if this will make any difference. Also what headlight bulbs will it take its an 83 gti the guy at gsf gave me h1 is this correct?
Any help much apreciated i wan't all the wireing sorted so i can get the carpets back in and mot it.

It's in the brake light section, and it maybe you have placed it in the wrong way round. It doesnt fit properly this way and usually wobbles.

To check its in the right slot look into the orrifice and you'll see 2 'tabs' that the bulb will make contact with (not including the earth chassis/casing)
