Brrrrrrr Blower Fun (If you can call it fun!)
Another day another problem with my 91 MK1 Clipper Karmann Cabriolet! I am having problems with my blowers and lets just say at this time of year its not what your after!
They don't work unless of course I am driving and then the air flow powers them - the faster I go the better they go - sadly the police don't think thats a justifiable reason for speeding :dontknow:
I took it to my mate mechanic and he was nice enough to direct tap the blower motor to the battery which gave me lovely warm gale force wind. Therefore it must be down to the wiring or as he suggested the relay…. 8O
I am quite good with electronics so I understand the basics, but I don't have the best documentation and so I don't know what relay to troubleshoot!
Anyway time to open it up to you guys, any ideas or theorys are more than welcome…
Cheers,
Davey (currently very cold when stationary in the Dubya ops: )

I got my mechanic friend to change the blower motor over for me (as I had heard how irritating the job was) but at first that did not work either. It was only until he hard wired it to the battery it started working. When hardwired to the battery it worked as normal and so I'm guessing that its a connection/relay issue. :dontknow:
My flat mate is an electrical whizz kid so I'm thinking I'll enlist his expertise to test the lines etc…
Really need to get it sorted soon, getting to work in the snow with steamy windows aint much fun! 8O
Cheers for the tip tho!

Showing my serious lack of knowledge ops: but my car is completely in german, I don't have very good manuals so can't really find much documentation on the relays of the cabrio's
Cheers mate

If a direct wire from battery powers motor OK, then the fault is elsewhere and there is nothing wrong with the blower motor itself. :dontknow:

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

strangely enough tho I'm pretty sure the switch was working without an issue when it was hardwired to the battery, thats what was making me think it was the relay/wiring…
it would be great if you could just click the fingers and these things got fixed eh!

No longer is this any fun, at all, not even slightly!!!
I have now replayed the relay andunp suggested, but sadly that hasn't sorted it.
So I took to taking the switch apart, and tested the three settings with a multimeter, but they all appear to be coming back with an 3.8 ohms. I have schematics for an 83 golf and my understanding is that they switch doesn't make the difference in the blower, it instead chooses the route through resistors which affect the blow strength accordingly :dontknow:
So now I plan to take the multi reader thing a little further testing the resistor on the blower itself and then start on the wiring
Any ideas from anyone on anything else it could well be before I get royally stuck in?
