Brake Lights Stuck On!

Hi all,

Just moved my car this morning from the road to the driveway.

And the brake lights are stuck on…..!

Where do I start with this?

Check, replace, the brake pedal switch located under the dash. There is adjustment built into the switch. If you disconect the wires, twist the switch and pull you can inspect it. The bit that makes contact with the pedal you can pull and hear a click click till fully extended. When refitting push the pedal hard down and and insert the switch back into the hole, then twist. Realease the pedal slowly and you should hear clicking as the switch is resetting it position. put the wires back on and check to see if that has cured it.

If that does`nt work the switch is dodgy and needs replacing or some other problem with the electrics.

How odd. my master cylinder appears to have two switches on it…. can't see any reference to two in the haynes.

If I disconnect the end one, all works fine.

Why would there be two switches?

Dual circuit brakes use two pressure switches - replace the one that is defective.

Cheers for the offer guys…  I purchased one anyway just before doing the work.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but it works with one switch disconnected, so why should I go through the hassle of changing a switch that appears to be superfluous?

It's a bit of overkill, but VW wanted to make sure that your brakelights would still work while you are "driving carefully to your nearest VW service station" after one of your brake-circuits has failed.

It's probably an EU requirement that cars should have the brakelights working, even if one of the circuits is down - probably why all manufacturers moved to a brake-pedal-based switch during the 80's
