Brake lights on all the time.

What is the best cure for brake lights staying on all the time on a 1983 Golf Mk1.

Was driving this morning with mine on.

Well first thing i'd look at is the brake light switch under your brake pedal cos it might have got stuck in the on position. If it's that it's only a few ?'s to replace and an easy job :D

Anyone else got any other suggestions? Any common faults or anything?

Thought so.

Does anyone have a part number for this, or could tell me if it is a two or three pin switch.

Thanks.

Brake light switch is a hydraulic switch on the master cylinder, I think its just Sciroccos that have a switch on the pedal (it might be a small block thing, all the big blocks have it on the MC???). Some cars have 1 switch, some have 2. If you have 2, then a quick fix would be to disconnect the one which is faulty. The proper fix would mean opening up the hydraulic circuit, so you'd have to bleed the brakes.

Thanks paul-c, looks like I will have to get the system bled and get the job done properly.   :banghead:

Update: 14th March.

Realised that a new brake switch was fitted to this car two years ago. Had a good look at it this afternoon and noticed the wire connector was not seated correctly. Cleaned it all up and brake lights now working perfectly.  :D
