Hi mate had a quick look on vw hertiage no relay listed for vw golf mk1 will ave a look in haynes manual for you soon but there is a brake light switch on the master cylinder that may be at fault i had a mk1 and brakes or lights didn't work we traced it to carb gasket as it was split and brakes work off vacumn no vacumn no brakes to so no lights sorry to ask but have you checked bulbs and connection, snapped wires,rusty/dirty connections?

wat i did was cut into the wire that plugs into fuse box, it runs to the reasr brake lights, i wired it straight to the battery and both brake lights worked, there is a live feed @ the plug that connects onto the brake master cylinder, but its inbetween its not sending a live feed to the rear … omg its boggling my brain, really apprecite all yr help , cheers m8

If you cut into wire and direct to batt doesn't that mean you by-passed switch on master cylinder proving that it's at fault? 4 relay on mk1 hazards, dip headlights, heated rear screen and intermitent wash wiper

Remove both spade connections from brake light switch touch together if lights come on switch f*ked if not i think problem with wiring at steering column/brake pedal

Yeah its not a complicated circuit - some power, switch, brake lights. The switch is faulty, so needs replacing. The problem is, them pressure switches need the brake system bleeding after replacement…which is a pain.

I think it should have 2 switches anyway, for each of the dual circuit hydraulics?

Wot vehicle is this then paul i don't know of pressure switch on mk1 servo.

Most Mk1 Golfs had 2 pressure switches on the MASTER CYLINDER (not the servo). Some had a switch on the pedal cluster.

You might only have 1 switch, someone before you could have removed it.

I had 2 switches but binned one of them off.

i have a brake switch off an early golf 1990 , wat im gonna do is bypass fuse box and then wre straight to battery, now all i gotta do is figure out how to connect to brake pedal to make it work, i tried it just and it works, but i need some how of mounting it ,  but iam glad i ripped the dash off, its turns out the wiring from the light switch that dims the clocks etc had totally burnt out

Both switches on the master cylinder, one for each circuit.

there is 1 sensor with 2 pins on it , do u mean this as 2 ?

Each pressure switch has 2 pins, if you still had the two pressure switches there it would be obvious as they are in close proximity, there may also be the remains of the small extension loom for the second switch.  If you're stuck on the pedal switch route, new pressure  switches are only 3 or 4 quid.

too late lol, when i looked where the switch goes on where the brake pedal is, there no holes etc, so i got my drill out and made some, but its 5cm away from pedal, in middle of making a spacing section to connect the the side of the pedal thus it will work... omg wat a nightmare this has been, then all i gotta do is put dash back on seats in , wheel bearing n brake pipe n i can actually drive it ............. :o)

the switch pin can be extended if you yank on it, that might be enough to make it reach
