Battery warning light/lamp not woking.

My battery warning light/lamp is not working whatsoever, i changed the led over and still does not flash, i believe if this is the case the battery will not charge, and it's actually not charging, i checked with a multimeter and its only reading 12v while engine is running! I've got an uprated alterntor from a vr6 rated at 120amps. What can i do to solve this problem? Someone please help me!!

Update: Problem solved, the exciter wire was disconnected! Dah! However while engine is running the battery only reads 13.3 volts and not 14.4?? What can this be the cause of?

13.3 is fine for when running, I don't think it should be as high as 14.4

Uncalibrated test meter?  :D

Just kidding, try the main earth lead from the battery for a start off.

Checked it over again, this time i placed the positive terminal directly ont he alternator and it was reading 14volts! I need to use a thicker wire, as theres voltage drop towards the battery.
Thanks for the heads up dudes.

Where is the exciter cable located?  I suspect I have the same problem?

Is it  wire behind the dials or on the back of the dials themselves?

Nope, its the little wire on the alternator (should be blue). It could be a break or disconnection further along.

Ahh I was expecting a connection in the back of the dials.  All seems to be working anyway :)

Cheers
