im not sure how to post pic yet the switches i have the twio main pins go the same way but on the loom one goes up the way and one goes alongcrazyquiff said
There are two switch types which have differnt pins on the back - If you have both then one should fit. Can you post a pic of the loom plug and the switch pins you have?

I'm guessing the loom is an early one (ie, early/mid '80's), and you have late (ie, late 80's early 90's) switches (?). I found that a Mk2 Polo had the same headlight switch as mine, but am guessing you'll need one from an early/mid 80's Mk1 Golf/Jetta.
Seem to remember the late switches were red plastic on the rear, but the earlier ones weren't (?) Can't remember properly, was a while ago…..

your right mate it is a red plug on the loom so what switch do you think i heed it says on the loom 1989 my cabby is 88 any helrp would be greatm6m62 said
Mr Quiff is indeed right on that one. I've got loads of Mk1 light switches, but none would fit the connector on my '92 Caddy (same dash loom as late Cabrio). The switches look the same apart from the connectors on the back.

Here is a pic of the earlier switch and connector. This is the type on most Mk1's (early - mid 80's) :
Here is a later switch and loom (on my '92 Caddy) :
As you can see, the 'old' plug is a lot squarer than the later one. The switches look the same at the front though, and either will fit in the dash. No idea if there's a third or fourth type, but I doubt it.
Hope it helps,

Right, forget what I said about the red plug as they're both black (on mine anyway (!). Seem to remember the plug was red on the Polo I got the later switch from though. Took some photos as was rummaging in the shed anyway, and also had to rescue my immobiliser LED that had slipped behind the dash, so ………..

I got mine from a Mk2 Polo in the scrapyard (about a G or H reg I think) - exactly the same switch. I had about 7 or 8 of the early ones, but none of the later ones when I needed it …….
